a rune tattoo

These are the runes I would like to have tattooed on my wrist. Just the symbol...not the stone.


And maybe one of these. Just the leaf...not the whole shebang.


And I am thinking of putting it on my right wrist...just at the top of my hand. Like this.


I have enlisted the assistance and advice of an artist I know and I have asked many friends who have tattoos. I don't want something that looks like I did it myself in prison. Something subtle and tasteful.

If you are reading this and have advice, I would be interested in hearing it as long as it isn't don't do it. I have heard the arguments about sagging old lady tattoos and I don't care about that. At this point in my life, I want a visible symbol of my journey.

At one time I had a vision of a tattoo of a naked man riding a dragon. I'm not sure where that came from but I'm glad it drifted out of my consciousness.

I have a quiet day planned. We're going to drink coffee, exercise, drink coffee, have lunch, do some writing, read and take a nap, maybe suck some leaves, and make pork chops for dinner. Sounds like a blissful day, no?

I have no advice about tattoos, Teresa, but you know the story of how we discovered Charlie's tattoo and what Larry did to tease him (It involved a permanent black marker and a pretend tattoo in a location he doesn't normally let people see.) I'd say get what you want so that it is meaningful to you, and if you happen to end up in prison some day, the other inmates will be in awe of your artwork.

PS I meant to say one more thing... I remember that lovely story by Elizabeth McCracken about the young woman who married a tattoo artist who used her body as a canvas for his art. You introduced me to McCracken's short stories in "Here's Your Hat, What's Your Hurry?" I need to get another copy of that book, as mine is long gone. I love her writing.

being thankful

It's easy to be overwhelmed by the crap in life because there certainly is some of it. Anybody who reads the paper, listens to the news, or who gets dressed and leaves the house once a day knows it. There are so many things for which to be thankful, though, so my mental exercise this morning as I drink my coffee and watch my fireplace is to think of them. The safety of our friend, Bob, after his terrifying roll-over on an icy road near Alexandria. It took me two days to respond to his email because it was such a frightening story. As he is a good and kind person, he didn't curse the state for not sanding or even nature for sending such road conditions, but he was grateful for the kindness of a stranger and for his health. dreams and sucking out the bad stuff

I don't really know what kind of drugs I was on during surgery. I know they gave me Versed right before I was wheeled down the hall. Just a little something to take the edge off, I guess. It also does a good job of erasing the memories. I recall seeing the OR but then the lights go out. The next few days have been like this Van Gogh painting...lots of starry naps and dim memories. I've been taking Percoset since I came home. It does a good job on the pain but today it created some nausea. It also makes me fall asleep in the middle of conversations which some people find disconcerting. I skipped my 2 o'clock dose but decided about 6 that a little nausea is worth the pain control. I am not a hero when it comes to pain. I don't even like a hint of pain. This is an interesting part of my post-surgical experience. It's a suction drainage thing. The tube end disappears into my skin under my arm and is fastened there with a couple of Frankenstein stitches.I
